Dynamic Meditation

More than an end result in and of itself, the power of meditation is revealed in our ability to apply it to our lives in a meaningful way. What if meditation was seen as a means of empowering our ability to communicate?

There are countless ways to meditate, since all that is really needed is a focal point. But that doesn't mean this focal point has to be unmoving. This center of focus could be our breath, something on the landscape, the feel and interaction with something in our hands, a posture, or certain sounds. It can take countless forms. 

What we are interested in here, however, is developing an internal trigger to a meditative state, rather than requiring a specific external situation to shift into such a state. After all, life can get pretty noisy and disruptive. Peace does not mean we never experience chaos - it means we can walk within that chaos and maintain our center. 

Instead of being seen as a sedentary, immobile, or trendy activity, dynamic meditation is a powerful way in which we can more fully interact with our world. Meditation allows us to quiet our 'mental chatter,' that part of our minds which many people identify with as 'self.' 

For example, do you find that you habitually react to certain situations either mentally, emotionally, or physically? What if you had more range in your ability to respond to these events, especially stressful ones, and subsequently could influence how you were responded to in turn? 

When we quiet or silence the script we continuously play out through our patterns of thought, belief, and behavior, we enter into a new realm. A vast realm. It is from this 'quiet mind' that our ability to communicate becomes greatly enhanced. 

This realm has many doorways within it. During the dynamic meditation classes I teach, we use the doorway of our physical senses as a means of entering a different state of awareness. This way, the transition into moving meditations becomes fluid, and thus we're able to transition into these states more easily during our daily life. 

There is a long history of separating from our physical existence, as if our physicality is somehow 'impure.' There has certainly been a lot of bloodshed, broken homes, scorched earth, despair, and trauma over the centuries. And like all tracks, events like these send out ripples through time that influence the very choices we make today, both individually and collectively. Which genes will express themselves in your DNA? What environmental queues, internal or external, will turn them on or off? What is our perceived experience of life? Does it really match up to what is actually going on around us? 

Through fully engaging our physicality (or anything for that matter), we can then transcend it. We reclaim our capacity to make a choice, free of the influence of that 'chatter-box' mind. 

A clarity emerges from this internal silence. We begin to more clearly perceive things as they are, without overlaying our prejudices and misperceptions. We gain a stronger ability to really listen to others, even if their views seem to differ from ours. We naturally begin to cultivate a deep respect for all things. From this awareness of the interconnectedness of all things and the cycles of nature, we discover a deeper truth, and our values become real and palpable. Compassion and empathy flourish effortlessly.
